Accompanied by her lover, Suzanna (Charlotte Gainsbourg), 40, views a Riviera beach house for her family's summer vacation. This day, this break in her routine, in this new house, will mark a turning point in her life. Based on the Marguerite Duras play of the same name, Suzanna Andler is the portrait of a woman trapped in her marriage to a wealthy, unfaithful businessman in the 1960s. She must choose between her conventional destiny as a wife and mother, and her freedom, embodied by her young lover (Niels Schneider).

“With its ultra-smooth camera movements, Suzanna Andler successfully moves beyond the asceticism of its “theatrical” film experience atmosphere to constitute one of the best films put forward by Jacquot of late.” —Cineuropa

“It almost feels at times like a 90-minute solo performance from one of the most endlessly fascinating actresses working today.” —eFilmCritic.com

“Elegantly-written and sinuously shaped, beautiful images. A really good, old-fashioned French art movie.” —Robin Hood Radio

“Benoît Jacquot adapts his mentor Marguerite Duras’ play, honoring her rich prose and timeless observations about class and relationships. As Suzanna, Gainsbourg is the moon and sun of the film and handles it effortlessly." —The Wrap

“Very old-school, windy, existentially glam, and extremely French.” —48 Hills
