Three films about the Mayan Indians available on one DVD!

Icarus Films is proud to announce the release of three films by Olivia Carrescia on DVD. Previously available separately on VHS, TODOS SANTOS CUCHUMATAN, TODOS SANTOS: THE SURVIVORS and MAYAN VOICES: AMERICAN LIVES are now released together for the first time on one DVD under the title A MAYAN TRILOGY: LIFE, DEATH & MIGRATION.

Hailed "a must" by American Anthropologist, this collection on the Mayan Indians of Guatemala preserves a record, and provides an acute observation on how the indigenous culture has been affected by, yet survived, that country's tumultuous history.
A unique and essential document!

New prize for THE PRIZE OF THE POLE!

Staffan Julén's film, THE PRIZE OF THE POLE, received the Best Expedition Film Award at the 2008 Explorers Club Film Festival. The film will be screened on Saturday June 14th at 1:30pm at the Explorers Club in New York City.

This documentary combines biography and history as it accompanies the Inuit hunter Hivshu, a.k.a. Robert E. Peary II, on a quest to trace the story of his great grandfather and his other ancestors, including the Eskimo family the famous Arctic explorer brought back with him to New York as part of an exhibit at the American Museum of Natural History in 1897.

New Cultural Anthropology Subject List
Anthropology is a broad field of study so to help you navigate to appropriate First Run/Icarus Films quickly, we are pleased to launch a new Cultural Anthropology subject page. Titles from the cultural anthropology collection include ARAB DIARIES, a five-part series focusing on the milestones of life, like marriage and work, of Arab individuals from various countries and notable for providing perspectives from Arab women; the classic CHRONICLES OF A SUMMER from filmmaking legends Jean Rouch and Edgar Morin, who explored the lives of Parisians during the summer of 1960 while war raged in Algeria in one of the early cinema verité films; and from our new releases, EVERYTHING’S FINE, the story of Seydou Konaté, the only doctor for 40,000 people in Southern Mali, offering revealing insights into the challenges of health care in Africa today. Check out the new Cultural Anthropology section.

Prizes and Screenings at the Upcoming
Society for Visual Anthropology Film Festival
We've just been informed that we have six films screening at the SVA Film Festival this November, and that three have won prizes! This festival is part of the American Anthropological Association Annual Conference.

LA SIERRA was given the Award of Excellence, the highest honor the SVA bestows on a film. THE DEVIL'S MINER was given an Award of Commendation, while COMPADRE won the Fieldwork Prize, “since the problems it depicts are so like those of many anthropologists in the field, and so rarely discussed.”

Additionally, TO BE SEEN, THE HUMAN HAMBONE and BRULY BOUABRE'S ALPHABET will be honored with screenings at this largest meeting of anthropologists in the world!
