Considered one of the foremost cinematographers in the history of film, Sven Nykvist is best known for his work with Ingmar Bergman, a collaboration that spanned three decades and produced some of the most important films of modern cinema.
Through film clips from Nykvist's remarkable oeuvre and interviews from an array of film personnel who've worked with him over the years, including Ingmar Bergman, Roman Polanski, Woody Allen, Liv Ullman, Susan Sarandon, and a host of others, LIGHT KEEPS ME COMPANY – directed by Sven Nykvist's son – profiles the life and work of the celebrated Swedish cinematographer.
Sven Nykvist first worked with Ingmar Bergman on the 1953 film, Sawdust and Tinsel. Almost a decade later, they would complete Winter Light, an international success, the film was the perfect distillation of their ideas on lighting and filmmaking.
They would collaborate together on twenty films, with Nykvist bringing his simple, luminous camerawork to such classics as Wild Strawberries, The Seventh Seal and Persona, replacing the high-contrast, glossy lighting that defined most art films of that time, with a softer, more expressive light. For his work, Nykvist twice won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography in Cries and Whispers (1973) and Fanny and Alexander (1981).
Despite a tumultuous personal life that included the tragic suicide of his oldest son and a sweeping love affair with Mia Farrow, Sven Nykvist continued to work in his later years, directing a feature film and collaborating on projects with filmmakers such as Louis Malle, Andrei Tarkovsky, Roman Polanski and many others. In 1998, while working on Woody Allen's Celebrity, he was diagnosed with Aphasia, an affliction that would end his career.
LIGHT KEEPS ME COMPANY employs rare home movies, family photographs, behind-the-scenes footage, and fond recollections from many of his friends and contemporaries to offer a moving and intimate look at the life of Sven Nykvist.
