Part of the MOROCCO, BODY AND SOUL series of half hour films which present various musical genres being performed in the environments which fostered them, all the while giving viewers a window into the diverse components which comprise Moroccan society.
Combining Arab and Moroccan poetry with accents from flamenco, Abdesadek Chekara and his orchestra, famous throughout Morocco, are among the most faithful interpreters of Arab-Andalusian music. The eleven "noubas," or suites, which they perform came to North Africa when the Muslims and Jews were expelled from Spain, but the music harkens back to a time of tolerance and coexistence, when Christians, Muslims, and Jews shared the land.
"Documents the instrumentalists, singers and dancers brought together by Abdesadek Chekara in his orchestra, famous throughout Morocco. This is an interesting group of musicians to watch... all the instruments are played by obvious viruosi.... A great display of musicianship."—EMIE Bulletin
